HBS Releases Essay for 2018-2019 Application Cycle

This is actually week-old news, but I wanted to make everyone sees this – the main question for the application is the same as last year: here’s what Harvard Business School Admissions Head Chad Losee said:

You can start working on the Class of 2021 application in early June 2018 when we open up the application, but in the meantime feel free to start thinking about the one required essay, which has remained the same:

As we review your application, what more would you like us to know as we consider your candidacy for the Harvard Business School MBA Program?”

My friend and colleague, Candy LaBalle, of LaBalle Admissions, and expert on these things, has some succinct advice about this prompt. Because she said it better, I am going to insert it right below:

  • Applying to an MBA program takes a lot of time —  more than you can imagine
  • But most applicants are already working 70+ hours & spending weekends playing sports, learning languages, giving to community (not to mention studying for the GMAT/GRE/TOEFL)
  • Use your time wisely & use all of it!
  • HBS deadline is 5 SEP! If you want to be a smart applicant, work on your key stories
  • While we do not know exactly what the other class of 2021 applications will ask, you will need to have clear, relevant stories about your:
          • goals
          • career highlights
          • leadership
          • community experiences
          • passions, qualities & traits

Try writing this essay from INSEAD:

      • “Give a candid description of yourself (who are you as a person), stressing the personal characteristics you feel to be your strengths and weaknesses and the main factors which have influenced your personal development”
      • And the Stanford GSB classic “What matters most to you, and why?”

Both will get you reflecting about who you are, what you want & what you offer — all essential for making a strong MBA application!
