What Admissions Committees Look For
What does an admissions committee look for? It’s not all odds or chances, or thumbs up or thumbs down. They have real discussions about a candidate’s strength, her potential, and importantly, the information they have chosen to share.
Betsy joined a panel at the Poets & Quants CentreCourt conference in San Francisco on June 15 to go through some candidate profiles. She and her fellow panelists gave some constructive feedback on candidates, and gave tips for how they can improve — what to emphasize, and what to downplay. Panelists commented on candidates strengths and noticed a few red flags — but many of those flags are correctable as well!
Note that the candidates are real people in the audience, and were excited to get such detailed feedback!
Things to look for: comments about GMAT scores, noting the quant and verbal split, advice about recommender choices, and some guesses on who will be the Democratic presidential candidate!
